The undisputed greatest writer in the English or indeed any, language, Carle is noted for numerous classic existential novels, most notably the metaphysical angst-fugue "The very Hungary Caterpillar", where the extraordinary meta-character of the hungry caterpillar, representing as it does the lot of the common man, seeking the mythical 'fruit' of the golden bough of quasi-millenial gender-neophyte schadenfreude.
